Recovering Unpaid Business Rates
Reminders for any unpaid business rates will be sent in the first instance and arrangements can be made for payments to be made in instalments. If payments are still not brought up to date then the right to pay by instalments will be taken away and any remaining balance will need to be paid in one lump sum.
If the remaining balance is still not paid then a court summons will be issued. The cost of issuing a summons will be added to your final bill. If the outstanding payment is made before the court hearing then no further action will be taken.
If no payment is made then the local council will apply for a liability order. This will allow the recovery of the outstanding amount – often through an enforcement agency (bailiffs).
If the outstanding payment is not recoverable then this can lead to imprisonment, bankruptcy or liquidation.
